ShinglEx 800 Showed 88% Less Granule Loss

PRI Asphalt Technologies, an independent roofing materials laboratory, evaluated asphalt shingles treated with ShinglEx 800 and compared them with untreated shingles using recognized ASTM test methods.

The shingles treated with ShinglEx 800 experienced approximately 88% less granule loss than the untreated shingles in ASTM D4977 testing.

Why Granule Loss Matters

The mineral granules on an asphalt shingle help protect the asphalt beneath from sunlight, weather exposure, and physical wear.

As shingles age, these granules can gradually loosen and wash away. Excessive granule loss may expose more of the underlying asphalt and contribute to continued roof deterioration.

ShinglEx 800 is a water-based acrylic treatment designed to form a protective film over asphalt shingles and help secure remaining granules to the shingle surface. To evaluate this performance, treated and untreated shingles were submitted for independent laboratory testing.


Test Objective

PRI Asphalt Technologies applied ShinglEx 800 to asphalt shingles according to the recommended two-coat application system.

The treated shingles were then evaluated alongside untreated shingles to compare granule loss and determine whether treatment affected shingle pliability.

The laboratory evaluated:

  • Granule adhesion using ASTM D4977

  • Pliability using ASTM D3462

Based on the average granule-loss results, the ShinglEx 800 treated shingles experienced approximately 88% less granule loss than the untreated shingles.

Granule-Loss Results in Detail

The ASTM D4977 testing was performed in duplicate rather than relying on a single test specimen.

ShinglEx 800 Treated Shingles

  • Test specimen 1: 0.06 g of granule loss

  • Test specimen 2: 0.06 g of granule loss

  • Average: 0.06 g

Untreated Shingles

  • Test specimen 1: 0.61 g of granule loss

  • Test specimen 2: 0.42 g of granule loss

  • Average: approximately 0.52 g

Loose surface granules were removed before testing, and the test specimens were taken from the exposed portion of the shingles.

The duplicate testing produced consistent results for the ShinglEx 800 treated specimens.


Approximately 88% Reduction

The treated shingles lost approximately 88% less granule material during the laboratory test than the untreated shingles.


Pliability Results

PRI also evaluated the treated and untreated shingles for pliability.

Both the untreated shingles and the ShinglEx 800 treated shingles passed the evaluation without cracking.

This result indicates that, for the samples tested, the application of ShinglEx 800 did not cause cracking during the laboratory pliability evaluation.


What Do These Results Mean?

The laboratory results suggest that ShinglEx 800 can significantly improve granule retention on asphalt shingles when compared with untreated shingles under the conditions of this test.

Improved granule retention may help protect the asphalt beneath the granules from continued exposure and weathering and may support the continued serviceability of an aging asphalt shingle roof.

The results do not mean that every roof will experience the same percentage of improvement. Roof age, existing condition, climate, surface preparation, application rate, and workmanship can all affect field performance.

ShinglEx 800 is intended for structurally sound asphalt shingle roofs that still have a reasonable amount of granules remaining. It is not intended to repair leaks, structural damage, severely brittle shingles, or shingles that require replacement.
