Black tar sealant is an asphalt-based or coal-tar pitch compound traditionally used to patch leaks, flashings, and seams on built-up and bituminous roofs. While effective for short-term fixes, traditional tar can become brittle when exposed to prolonged sunlight and thermal movement. Silicone roof sealants exhibit versatile adhesion across a wide range of commercial substrates. They bond effectively to metal, concrete, masonry, wood, asphalt, built-up roofing, and modified bitumen. Additionally, they adhere to single-ply membranes such as TPO, EPDM, and spray-applied polyurethane foam. Surfaces must be thoroughly cleaned, dry, and structurally sound prior to sealant application to ensure optimal bonding and membrane performance.

Black silicone roof sealants are single-component formulations that require no mixing or separate catalysts. They can be applied using a standard brush, heavy-nap roller, or commercial airless spray equipment. Because the material cures by reacting with moisture in the air, application should take place in dry conditions onto clean substrates, resulting in a continuous, monolithic protective barrier without vulnerable seams or joints.

Silicone roof sealant cannot be applied directly onto active standing water, as the substrate must be clean and dry during installation.
